When you have a  passion about something I think you should pursue it.  As a child i loved to write stories and poems. I especially had a flair for suspense and drama. I began to write my own stories and read them to myself out loud. That was as far as I ever went with them. I convinced my work was good, but not good enough to share with others.

You will never know if you are good at something if you don’t put it out there for others to try.  Once you believe in yourself, others will believe in you too. It is never too late to follow your dreams.  Start out small, try your ideas out on others; you will be amazed at what they say.  How about all those people who invent things, do they know for sure that have a winner, or do they just take a chance?

The person who believed in me the most was my older sister, I heard her say so many times how good my stories were. I know now I should have listened to her. Time and time again she would say that we should write a book about our father’s mysterious past. We had a really good story to tell, and she was so sure I could do it. I regret to say that I waited too long, and she passed away suddenly. I couldn’t let her dreams die too, so I wrote ” Shadows of His Past” in her memory. More than that I learned to believe in my passion and follow it through. If anyone has any doubt about realizing their dream, I hope they read my blog!

We all have those memories stored in the back of our minds. I refer to this place as the Vault. It’s a great little place where we go to time and time again. It’s almost like our very own library. I know it can be unfortunate sometimes when bad memories surface, but there are also so many good ones that bring a smile to our face.

These memories we have are custom built for us, they are under construction throughout our entire life. Vacations are great memory builders, and so are holidays. Remember your grammar school teacher you always looked up to? What about all those friends we made in high school? Oh and of course our first love, we can never forget that!

It is true whatever we do in life becomes a memory for someone else. Isn’t it great to remember all the family traditions? I always loved them, we pass them down from generation to generation and they become our trademark. Recently I observed my grown children sitting together laughing and talking about all their high school friends. I took a step back and just listened, honestly it brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart.

I think even if we don’t open the vault everyday, we still know that the memories are back there in a safe place and as long as we never loose the key, they will be ther forever!

The age old saying is really not just words, it is a true fact for some of us. Years ago that is where the so called skeletons remained in the closet. It was like a sin to reveal something you learned about someone. We were programmed never to tell. Today with just a click of the mouse it’s out there for millions to see.

I know we all would like to believe we don’t any of that goulash guys in our closets, but sorry to say a lot of us do. I laugh about it now, and even tell jokes, but when it happened in my family, I somehow couldn’t find the humor. When you read Shadows of His Past it will tell you all about it.

How does this all happen anyway? Is it just merely keeping a secret, or telling a lie? I guess when it’s happening to you, covering it up seems best for everyone. It’s really hard not to think of yourself first when your in that situation, so; what you don’t know won’t hurt you comes into play. At least I think that is how I look at it.

I keep asking myself if sometimes we just tell too much, or is it the just our world as it is today? Everyone’s life is an open book now. In the book you will clearly see how hiding the past eventually hurt many people. Honestly I am on the fence about how far we should dig into someone’s personal life.

Is it Safe to Keep Secrets?

It’s really ironic how the topic this week on talk shows and in the news is the question, Did you ever discover a family secret? That is something I lived with throughout my childhood. In my book Shadows of His Past, I tell the story of how my father had a past life that none of us knew about.

When you read this book you will learn how Dominick started a new life with a new family and the old one sat in the back of his mind never clear enough to explain to anyone. But, did the past eventually return for him and did he choose to keep it a secret?

Sometimes bringing up a family member’s past can be painful, and other times it can actually help the person clear his or her conscience. That is something we need to consider before searching for the truth. Shadows of His Past is both heartwarming and a thrilling mystery that questions the past life of a loving father and husband. The young girl trying to help her father face his past is overwhelmed by what she discovers.

Helping someone find out about his past life or a relative can be like a Double Edged Sword. What might seem like a good deed, to help someone dig up the past can turn out to be a problem for them in the long run. Once you have uncovered the secret, then you have to decide what to do with it. Do you tell the world, or keep it a secret?

Then there is always the question that comes to mind, if there is a family member, why aren’t they looking for you? In the twisted turn of events in the book Dominick becomes depressed, part of this is due to just that nagging question, why didn’t anyone look for him?  I think many do want to know if there is a family secret, but others fear the truth they may learn and how to handle it. If Dominick learned the truth on his own, would he have kept it a secret?

I was prepared to learn the truth about my father, and for many years I knew I wanted his story to be told. We all have the right to know who we are and where we came from, but it’s really your choice whether your happy with your life as you know it, or do you want all the cards laid out on the table?

If we had the modern technology to find missing persons back in the 1930’s as we do today, I am sure Dominick’s story would be told quite differently. Organized crime back then was on the rise, but it was also considered a dark secret and people were afraid to even talk about it. That is why after Dominick went missing his family feared the worst. It was assumed that he had gotten mixed up with criminals, and that he probably was killed.

Many of us today can trace back our family roots and find out practically anything we want to know about our ancestors. The beating Dominick took left him no choice but to start a new life. As the shadows in his mind began to haunt him, his daughter Molly tries to help him make the shadows become clear. She had no idea what danger she put herself in as well as her family and friends. At the time it seemed like the right thing to do, Dominick was battling depression as well as fear that his past was returning.

To fear the unknown is normal for anyone, but now Dominick has to constantly look over his shoulder and even doubts his best friend Joe. Unaware of what she would find, Molly decides to look for her grandparents. Dominick does see shadows of an older woman who he believes could be his mother. Imagine you are missing and no one even tries to find you, this haunted Dominick too. Why what was the deep dark secret?

The task of trying to find family members for someone who had nothing to go by was like finding a needle in a haystack. Determination was part of Molly’s DNA just like her father, she could not leave any stone unturned in the search for Dominick’s past. As a child you always think you know all there is to know about your parents or another family member, but is that always true? Would Molly’s love for her father and strong will to find the truth prove to help her family or would she be putting everyone in danger?

Find out if digging up Dominick’s past was the right thing to do?
